To secure employment within the TEFL industry, candidates must be at least 18 years old and possess a high school diploma (Leaving Certificate/A-levels/Matric or equivalent) as a minimum requirement. Some employers may prefer candidates with a degree. Additionally, in certain countries, a degree (in any subject) is necessary for visa application purposes. In essence, prospective English teachers with a degree tend to have more TEFL opportunities available to them.
