Product Description

Premium Quality Magnetic Tiles

top image

STEAM Studio's magnetic star tiles feature a unique star facet design that provides strong structure, scratch-resistance, and beautiful refraction. Each tile has strong magnets to allow children to build taller and bigger structures. These magnetic star tiles resemble diamond brilliance when they get lights to shine over, and are completely translucent, with vivid rainbow colours that won’t fade or become foggy over time. The 110pcs set includes a mixture of squares, triangles, and a car base perfect for building new and inventive vehicles to drive through your tile town. The isosceles triangles in the 110pcs set can form a complete dodecagon when placed together!

STEAM Studio's magnetic tiles are secured with Rivets that significantly reduces the risks of exposing small magnets to children and last much longer for heavy use, compared to other brands of magnetic tiles that do not have rivets as a safety feature.

Mostly great, few minor issues.
Our kid loves these magnet tiles and all our previous tiles were from the cheaper Anko brand at a well known K store. I liked the idea of the tubes with this set and wasn't opposed to some premium tiles.First, they are compatible (photo included), they are almost identical in shape and the magnet positions are close enough. So you can mix and match just fine. They are however, ever so slightly taller, like maybe 1mm or less, it doesn't usually cause any issue, you can have some slight slants with towers but these tiles have never been all too straight anyway. Now are they worth the extra money? Maybe...just because of the thicker magnets. They seem to create a more secure, stronger connection between tiles and they weigh a little bit more, which also seems to help with the sturdy feeling. I've noticed they buckle less under weight from above tiles.Other than that, I didn't feel the differences mattered. The "rivet secured" just looks a bit more stylish but I've never had the generic brand break, not a single tile and my kids body slam towers. So I'm not sure those rivets matter much. Now on to the tubes!Pros:You get a lot of them, definitely more than this set needs, so it's great they're thinking about usage with other tile sets. This singular box you can create a lot of different creations. What's really great, is you can mix the generic brand in for the "bulk" of the build, as you only need the special connector tiles for the tubes. When you do this, you can really make some impressively large structures, you won't run out of tubes quickly. Also while the start of your build will be a bit unstable and shaky, once you get going you can see in my photos a single tile can really take a lot of height and weight on top of it. The structure becomes quite rigid and strong as you build. The shapes of tubes are also well thought out and the "drop zone" piece (the large bowl like piece) has a nice little detail where it's angled in a way that the balls spin and spin around the bowl, slowly getting to the middle hole. Excellent detail and a bit of extra fun!Cons:The connection between tube and tile is...not the best. First it's extremely hard for a kid to do this by themselves, you need to apply a lot of force to get it to "click" and you also need to apply it rather precisely from the bottom of the tube. "Pushing" a tube straight in the tile rarely works, even if you push quite hard, it just doesn't click well like this. You need to get your thumbs and rather precisely apply pressure directly at the point of connection. Really not easy for kids to get and it didn't happen in this house, though I appreciate kids come with all different strengths and abilities. But it's also the first building component my kids have struggled with, we play with a lot of this construction stuff.Another issue is we had more than one dud tile or tube. That is, they simply don't hold a connection at all, either the tile is faulty or the little extra piece of plastic on the tube connector isn't quite right or the tab is perhaps not right? I'm not sure but I do know, a good 5 pieces (maybe more, I didn't test every piece as a connector) are simply not usable, no amount of attempts will get them to click together. It's not a massive deal, as you can just use those tiles for structure rather than connection, so they're not worthless and as I mentioned you get plenty of tubes. But that does make me worry about the longevity of the tubes and tiles holding a connection. I feel like there is potential for them to wear down over time and stop connecting strongly. There's no leeway here, without a strong connection, they will just fall over.So here comes my biggest gripe! In a magnet set, why not have designed it so the tubes are also magnetic? And everything just snaps together! If the tubes were all whole pieces with a full faced square on the ends, you could simply magnetically snap everything together!Another (very) minor gripe, is the bowl shaped piece I mentioned, it would be great to be able to utilise in the middle of a build, not just the start or end. As the spin effect is really neat and is good way to slow the ball down and give the whole build more "ball time". I have a photo of our attempt to do this but as you can see, the length of the plastic is slightly too long, so your next tile over won't align. A missed opportunity in my eyes.Summary:Still a great toy and still a lot of fun. Once you have something built, the kids will have a great time sending the balls down and then thinking of new ways for it travel. Because they couldn't directly connect, I just engaged my kids by having them be in charge of deciding how everything goes and also asking them what tubes they'd need to make it happen. I really just did the final "click".So still lots of puzzle solving and challenges there and they overall still really enjoyed it, despite not being able to build the connections. Of course they can still assist in building other structures and there's a lot of bulk snaps to make. We played for 2hrs straight the first go and I'm positive I'll have more requests to get this set out. Thanks for sticking out with my verbose review :) Hope it helped and I think you'll be fine grabbing this set to expand any (or start a new) magnet collection.I'll definitely be keeping an eye for new expansion sets to these tubes and hope they can create more innovative tube ideas to create more excitement in the middle of the builds.

Pros:

You get a lot of them, definitely more than this set needs, so it's great they're thinking about usage with other tile sets. This singular box you can create a lot of different creations. The team at Steam Studio were so helpful in answering my questions prior to purchase as well as checking in to see if I had any questions after delivery.

This product has been put away for Christmas so I cannot yet comment on the function but it does look very similar to other quality products on the market. I have faith that this will be well loved when it is gifted!

I haven't been able to find a review online comparing this brand to Connetix, so here it is.

Magnet strength - In comparing to Connectix, these are just as strong.
Compatibility - These work perfectly fine with Connectix, and are exactly the same dimensions. The appearance is very similar, and I don't suspect my kids to fuss over the minor differences between them visually.
Strength - I haven't let my kids loose on them yet, but the materials and strength of these tiles seem very comparable to Connetix.

I highly recommend these over Connetix considering the price difference! ($50 less for practically the same thing).

The tubes don’t go on and stay on easily. Honesty, I tried after my kids and noticed that it was hard due to the tubes being in half and not an actual tube.
