5.0 out of 5 stars very sharp, be careful

I absolutely love this tool. This is my 5(?) Kyocera. The blades do get dull, so you do need to replace them. Use the finger guard! I was lazy. Very painful and bloody mess. Super glue to the rescue.

This co. seems to have sorted out the problems with these graters. My first one (yellow/beige one in pic) was bought when these were a new idea (and I still prefer for garlic cloves). It is very good and was cheap and does the job. However this Japanese one has a silicone ring around the bottom that holds it rock solid when grating. The sharp pointy grating area really grates into a very fine end product and is high above the rest of the dish so I don't grate my hands. When I'm done grating (a lot of ginger for ginger tea) I just pour boiling water over the grating part until the trough is full, pour it into the cup and do that until the ginger's all gone and the dish is basically clean. Top it off with boiling water- oh and I always have a tea bag of some sort in there, too. I've discovered the trick with all these graters is to get them wet before you grate anything and it makes grating faster and easier. I wash my ginger when I buy it, put it into a plastic bag and freeze it. To make the tea take out a frozen ginger chunk, wet your grater and in 30 seconds you have a good amount of ginger for ginger tea. If you are grating garlic and other things that don't get washed off with water this little dish comes with a tiny green brush that you use to scrape the dish contents off. Its bristles are semi-pliable plastic and work well. However I prefer my old one for garlic simply because it has a duller cutting surface and when I do garlic cloves I have a tendency to smash them pretty far down and the white dish has such pointy points I don't want to cut myself which the old one isn't sharp enough to do .The dish I have is the larger 6" one. there is a smaller 3 1/2" one but I opted for more grating surface- and a taller grating area. I'm glad I did and would do it again. It is a product that should last a very very long time so you might as well spend the money to get the better product. But I also recommend the little old kind for mincing very small items like garlic unless you don't mince them very far down.

Works great at grinding down ginger. Best to buy the larger size. I love the fact it comes with a brush to remove all the ginger from the grinding part. Its also nice it has a moat around the grinding part to collect the juices and the fiber,
